Wonderful week for Bessbrook star Charlotte as she wins Young Player of the Year and makes her international debut
What a week it was for Bessbrook’s Charlotte Havern, as she made her Senior international debut for Northern Ireland, received the PFA NI Young Player of the Year award, and turned 17!
The teenage star, who was offered a professional contract by Women’s Super League side Brighton and Hove Albion back in March, spoke to the Newry Reporter about her achievements, and what it meant to receive the recognition as Young Player of the Year, for her performances with Cliftonville in the NIFL Premiership.

“It's a huge honour, as there are so many talented young players in the Women's Premiership,” she said.
“So, to be recognised in this way by the players means a lot. It's a reward that has been achieved with the support I've had from Cliftonville, my teammates, coaches and family throughout the season.

“There were a few really special moments throughout the season, but the one that stands out was winning the NIFL Women's Premiership league title.”
When Havern last spoke to the Reporter seven months ago, she listed making her debut for Northern Ireland as one of her goals. On Friday October 9th, she achieved that goal when she came off the substitutes bench in the Green and White Army’s FIFA World Cup Playoff match against Portugal.
As for what was going through her head at that moment, she said: "It was a mix of excitement and nerves.
“It's something you've dreamed about and then suddenly it's happening. Once I stepped onto the pitch, I tried to focus on enjoying the moment and doing my best for the team."
Northern Ireland came up against strong opposition, losing 7-1 across two legs against Portugal, but the experience of being involved in an international set-up is something that will benefit Charlotte exponentially, as she continues to develop as a footballer.
“I've learned so much from the players and staff around me,” she said.
“Being in that environment has shown me the standards and commitment needed at the highest level. It's helped me grow both as a player and as a person."
Charlotte also had advice for any young girls who have aspirations of following in her footsteps and competing at the highest level.
“Be committed, work hard and enjoy it,” she said.
“There will be ups and downs, but stay focused and keep believing.”
