Ho-ho-whole lot of fun is planned for Newry switch-on!
The first of Newry, Mourne and Down’s Christmas light switch-ons, it comes at a crucial time for the city following the recent flooding and signifies that Newry is open for Christmas trading.
This year’s switch-on, which runs from 6-9pm, has been expanded from its usual base at Marcus Square to also include Hill Street, Newry Town Hall and the Bank Parade/Sugar Island area.
There will be plenty to keep the family entertained with local music performers in Marcus Square including Shane McGirr, Emily Flanagan and the Uplifted Gospel Choir who will be joined by a very special guest!
The event will conclude with Cloughmore Male Voice Choir performing a traditional choir service around the tree. The Marcus Square stage will compared by Connor Martin.
The big moment will come at 7.30pm when local lad Alfie Pentony from the Fight for Alfie charity will join the Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Cllr Valerie Harte and Santa Claus to switch on the Christmas lights and officially start the festive period in Newry.
Meanwhile, Newry Town Hall will host a Christmas Artisan Market with spaces given to the businesses directly affected by the recent flooding.
A range of arts, craft and festive children's activities will take place on the evening.
Sugar Island/Bank Parade will be pedestrianised for the evening with a small food outlet and seating.
It all promises to be a great night of festive entertainment so make sure you’re there!
