St John Bosco Boxing Club Newry, alongside Milligan Reside Larkin Architects and Belfast-based consultant company S3 Solutions have drawn up plans for a brand-new state-of-the-art facility.

At the moment, St John Bosco are the only club in Newry who don’t have their own stand-alone premises.

Whilst other clubs may get three or four hours an evening every night of the week, in their current premises, the Bosco club are limited to one hour, three nights a week, and they have over 30 children on their waiting list.

The new premises will be located next door to their current clubhouse.

St John Bosco’s Bernadette Curran spoke to the Newry Reporter and she is excited for the club to have a place to call their own.

“We have had many successful years, but the current premises are no longer fit for purpose,” she said.

“We have a lot of Senior boxers coming through, and we need state-of-the-art facilities. With our own facility, we can do a lot more than just boxing, we will run workshops for women and children, and hopefully accommodate the residents of over 100 new houses which have been built in the area.

“Tony Patterson says ‘the best champions were built out of tin huts’ – that was years ago, not now. To have your own building, and being able to do whatever you want, whenever you want is just like heaven for us.”
