St Monica’s Boxing Club entered four boxers in this year’s Celtic Box Cup in Neilstown, Dublin and came away with four gold medals.

The boxers were: Kayla Harris - 37kg Champion; Michael Dudzix - 65kg Champion; Callum McAlinden – 52kg Champion; Ryan Murphy - 80kg Champion

Coach Owen Murphy said, “it was great to be part of this competition. We go to a lot of Box Cups, and this has to be up there with the best of them. It was very well organised with plenty of officials and helpful staff. The judging overall was excellent, and the competition is a credit to the Neilstown club and coaches.”

Ryan Murphy had three contests in three days and got stronger with each one. He stopped his opponent in the second round of the final. Ryan has a busy schedule ahead of him, with the Antrim Seniors from May 19 to May 24 and the Manchester Box Cup May 25 to May 27.

Callum McAlinden had a final contest against the home boxer. It was toe to toe for 3 rounds with him getting the decision on a 2/1 split decision. This was a fantastic result for Callum as he entered the competition at the last minute.

Michael Dudzix performance in the final was probably the best he ever boxed. He was in against an experienced Dublin lad who pushed Michael all the way. Michael had to dig deep for this one and he’ll grow in confidence after his performance. This will take him to the next level.

Kayla Harris was unlucky in the final as her opponent had to pull out with an injury. However, Kayla was up for this contest as she had all the hard work done in preparation. We will be looking forward to the Junior Cadets at the end of May.
