Mayobridge man Charlie Smyth has re-signed with the New Orleans Saints and will join their practice squad, per Michael McQuaid of Pro Football Ireland.

Smyth didn’t make the 53-man roster in yesterday’s cuts but this is a show of faith from the Saints’ coaches that they believe he is a good enough kicker to keep around the team.

Experienced kicker Blake Grupe will be the starting kicker for the Saints when the NFL season kicks off next week, but Smyth will be on hand to step in should Grupe pick up an injury or endure a spell of bad form.

Whilst everyone had of course hoped that Smyth would make the starting team, considering that he only began his American football journey 12 months ago, this will allow him to continue his development.

The Mayobridge man will be the designated International Player Pathway (IPP) player on the practice squad.

Should he be required to step in, he showed that he can hold his nerve, as he kicked a game-winning field goal against the Arizona Cardinals in the Saints’ pre-season opener.
