King takes to the throne at Newry City
Newry City have announced the appointment of new First Team Manager Stuart King this evening.
King comes to the club following a successful spell at Carrick Rangers where he managed the Premiership side for three years.
King also boasts an impressive career, with stints at English clubs Preston North End and Southend United and Scottish clubs Ross County and Queen of the South in his younger years, before he starred for Irish League sides Linfield, Ballymena United and Glenavon.
The priority for King will be securing Newry’s promotion out of the Playr-Fit Premier Intermediate League, following the club’s back-to-back relegations.
King has plenty of time to get to work in the transfer market between now and the new season, and it will be intriguing to see who he elects to bring in.
The club announced his arrival with a statement on their website which read:
‘Newry City AFC are pleased to announce the appointment of Stuart King as First Team Manager. Stuart comes with a wealth of experience both as a player and as a manager, we trust he will be an excellent fit at The Showgrounds.
‘Stuart commented “I am delighted to be at The Showgrounds, it’s been going on in the background for a while now and I have had plenty of discussions with the club and had things that I wanted to think through before I accepted but now I am very pleased it’s over the line.
‘“I believe this is a brilliant project for me, it’s close to home and I have family from Newry, I think I can really make a difference here and help put smiles back on peoples faces. I am really looking forward to talking to the players and staff and start getting new players in.”’
King replaces Darren Mullen at the helm, but Mullen will be remaining at the club in a committee role.
Newry City are also in the process of selecting a new chairperson, following Martin McLoughlin’s decision to step down from his role at the end of the season.
