Newry City confirm the re-signings of six players including captain Darren King and Ciaran O’Connor
Newry City announced today that they have re-signed six current squad members to new deals as they look to begin the hunt for promotion back up to the top-flight next season.
The players are: Darren King, Ciaran O’Connor, Ryan McGivern, Stephen Moan, Georgie Poynton and Jordan Mooney.
King led Newry to promotion as captain in the 2021/22 season and will be hopeful of repeating that feat this year.
O’Connor was Newry’s second top scorer last season with six goals from centre-attacking midfield.
Former Manchester City and Hibernian defender McGivern – who has 24 international caps for Northern Ireland – brings a wealth of experience, and has been a mainstay in the centre of Newry’s defence since signing in 2021.
Moan is another player who brings plenty of experience, and he was a key player for Newry when they were promoted from the Championship in 2021/22.
Poynton was an addition last summer and he impressed in both central midfield and at right back.Likewise, Mooney joined one year ago, and he featured 22 times for City last season. One for the future, the 20-year-old will be hoping for even more opportunities this year.
The summer transfer market is now well up-and-running, but there was some bad news for Newry City fans yesterday, with Player of the Year Barney McKeown moving to Glenavon.
However, these re-signings will give supporters a lift. It is also understood that January signings – who were brought in by Barry Gray – Steven Ball, Fra McCaffrey and Conor Mitchell will be staying at the club, as will last season’s top goal scorer Adam Salley and 2022/23 Young Player of the Year Donal Scullion.
Newry City squad list: Conor Mitchell, Stephen Moan, Darren King, Ryan McGivern, Noel Healy, Georgie Poynton, Donal Scullion, Francis McCaffrey, Steven Ball, Lorcan Forde, Jordan Mooney, Ciaran O’Connor, Adam Carroll, Adam Salley.
