Sinn Féin’s Chris Hazzard MP is asking for immediate action to address growing safety concerns regarding a dangerous roadside verge in Hilltown.

Following a number of recent "close calls” on the Kilkeel Road; the South Down MP says the Department for Infrastructure (DFI) "must take local concerns seriously” before something tragic occurs.

Mr Hazzard said: “Earlier this week, I was out on the Kilkeel Road again with local residents who are concerned that the roadside verge is becoming increasingly vulnerable, with a dangerous overhang falling away to the fields below.

“With no crash barrier or reinforced fencing in place at the location, and the growing number of vehicles using the Kilkeel Road - including large agricultural vehicles and HGV lorries - commuters and residents are increasingly concerned that a tragic incident is going to happen.

Mr Hazzard added: “I will be making direct contact once again with DFI offices to request that urgent action is taken regarding this issue on the Kilkeel Road, and hope that they will bear in mind the growing level of concern in the local community.

“Pedestrians and drivers must feel safe when travelling through our communities and it is my priority to see the necessary action is taken to ensure that.”
