Newry City area Sinn Féin councillor Cathal King has said that urgent action is needed to address dangers on the Ferryhill Road.

The councillor made his comments after a vehicle went off the road at the brow of the hill.

Cllr King said, “The most recent incident where a car came off the Ferryhill road at the brow of the hill, is a clear indication that urgent work is needed to address this danger.

“Thankfully on this occasion no one suffered injuries but action needs to be taken before there is a more serious incident.”

Confirming that he had contacted the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) seeking an urgent meeting, the Sinn Féin elected representative explained, “This isn’t the first time this has happened, and winter weather only makes it more dangerous.

"My colleague Liz Kimmins MLA and I have been working for quite sometime now with the community, lobbying for a crash barrier to be put in place here. We believe that is the solution needed.”

Concluding, the Councillor said, “I will keep local residents updated, but in the meantime I would urge all motorists and pedestrians using this stretch of road to continue to do so with caution.”
