Politicians welcome Trust’s cut reversal decision
News that funding from the Southern Trust for Newry Gateway Club has been restored has been welcomed by MLAs.
Newry and Armagh Sinn Féin representative, Liz Kimmins, who also is Chairperson of the Assembly’s Health Committee said, “Had the Trust proceeded with this decision, there would have been significant ramifications for the future of the Gateway Club.

"Newry Gateway Club are an institution in the Newry area, providing a safe and supportive environment for adults with learning disabilities for over 50 years, often on a shoestring budget.
“The outcry from throughout our community clearly showed the love and respect we have for this organisation and the caring and professional services it provides.
"I have no doubt this was a major influence in the Trust reversing their original decision and I commend all, our voice was heard.”
Justin McNulty MLA (SDLP) said that for more than 50 years, Newry & District Gateway Club has provided a lifeline service to adults and children with learning disabilities and for their families.
"At a time when people with disabilities were left on the margins of society, Newry Gateway were trailblazers in providing an inclusive and accommodating space, where members of all ages could shine and thrive,” he stated.
“Today, Newry Gateway provides that same exceptional, and cross-community, support to people from as wide a catchment area as Banbridge, Lurgan, Armagh, Kilkeel, Newry and Crossmaglen.
“I was totally stunned when the Southern Trust announced such a cruel cut on the most vulnerable in our society, particularly when the value of current funding provided to Gateway by the Trust stands at just £10,000.
“I was very happy to have worked quietly behind the scenes to support the Gateway in having this ridiculous cut reversed. A major well done to Paddy Duffy and the dedicated team at Newry Gateway for responding so rapidly and so forcefully to defend their club and members.
“The people of Newry, South Armagh, and South Down are rock solid in their support of the Newry Gateway. Long may that continue and long may the Gateway continue to help its members shine and thrive.”
