Outgoing chair of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council reflects on year in office
The outgoing chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council says it has been a “great honour and privilege” to hold the chains of office for the past year
Sinn Féin Newry councillor, Valerie Harte, will officially step down from the role at tonight’s (Monday) council AGM.

Cllr Harte said she was “grateful to Sinn Fein, my SF Team, and my elected colleagues for trusting me with this important role”.
She continued, “During my time as Chairperson, I have had the opportunity to explore the length and breadth of this district and witness the incredible work being done by numerous groups, organizations, and charities, as well as the economic growth of local businesses. It is truly inspiring to see so much good happening in our community.

"While the role has presented its challenges, particularly during the recent floods which had a devastating impact on all involved, a challenge not just for the Council but the many businesses and homeowners, standing with them and helping them in the clean-up was hard, but as Councillors, that’s what we are here for, stepping up when it's needed.
"I can safely say that I did that and will continue to support our community hereafter.”
She added: “A huge thank you to everyone who has been there for me, with a special mention to the Democratic Services team in the council, especially Sheila Kieran and Sarah Taggart. Their unwavering support has been invaluable, and I have formed a strong friendship with them.”
Cllr Harte said that one of the highlights of her year as chairperson was being able to raise £15,000 for local grassroots groups through her International Women's Day initiative.
"As a strong advocate for disability rights, being able to support my five chosen charities has been a meaningful experience that I will always cherish,” Cllr Harte continued.
"I wish nothing but success for Down Right Brilliant, Life Changes Changes Lives, Newry All Stars Special Olympic Club, Sound Friends Deaf Children's Society, and Well Lane Warriors F.C and will continue to support them as and when they need.
“Lastly, a huge thank you to my family for their unwavering love, encouragement, and ongoing support. Their dedication has been a constant source of strength since my initial election to the council in 2011. Despite the late nights, early mornings, and extended periods away from home, they have consistently motivated me to persevere through challenging times in my role.”
She concluded: “I look forward to taking a short break and getting back to being your Newry City Councillor.”
