Mr McNulty said that work must commence immediately and at pace so that a new contractor can be appointed to deliver the stadium in time for Euro 2028.

Speaking after Ulster GAA’s announcement the Newry and Armagh MLA said: “It’s a huge disappointment that a local company Heron Brothers Ltd., who have longstanding links with the GAA, will not proceed as the main contractor after Buckingham Group went into administration. A new framework route is being considered to deliver the project that falls within Public Contracts Regulations and my hope is that local delivery partners form part of this going forward.

“I spoke with Damian Heron and whilst he is terribly disappointed after all the hard work his company has already put into the Casement project, as a Gael he just wants to see this game changer brought to completion.

“Once again, the hope now is that local firms can be brought in as potential local delivery partners as quickly as possible. It’s important that we ensure access to the local supply chain that could secure and bolster huge numbers of local jobs and businesses.

“This is obviously an unplanned bump in the road in relation to the Casement Park project programme, however with a will to use every accelerated tendering vehicle at its disposal, together with an all hands on deck approach from the Department for Communities with the right people at the helm, Casement Park can be built in time for the Ulster Final in 2027 and Euro 2028.”
