McNulty: Geo-blocking of our national games must stop

SDLP Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty is calling for an end of the geo-blocking of RTÉ programming in the North.

Geo-blocking refers to the inability of many viewers in the north to access RTÉ’s coverage of Irish sporting events due to rights restrictions - “a source of deep frustration for so many people”, says Mr McNulty.

He added: “Geo-blocking feels like a snub for us Northerners, plain and simple, and I have been campaigning to have this issue addressed alongside my colleagues in the SDLP.

“What we need to see is action from the Executive to establish an IP address specific to the North, so that licensing agreements do not interfere with the ability of Northern viewers to access the full suite of RTÉ programming and content.

“I have requested a meeting with the RTÉ Director General, and I have written to the Economy Minister urging her to get a unique IP address established in the North to end the practise of geo-blocking.”
