McMurray praises efforts of engineers in storm aftermath

South Down MLA Andrew McMurray has praised the continuing effort of engineers working reconnect homes without electricity.

Approximately 65,000 customers remain without electricity across Northern Ireland with power now restored to 220,000 properties following the extensive damage to the electricity network caused by Storm Eowyn on Friday.

“In what has been one of the worst storms, certainly in my memory, much praise must first go to the workers who are continuing to work in order to both reconnect homes as well as clearing roads of fallen trees,” said the Alliance MLA.

"I appreciate that much inconvenience is caused by losing power, and there are some situations where having electricity is a necessity in order to manage medical needs. Northern Ireland Electricity are working around the clock in conditions which are, given Sunday’s yellow wind warning, still very challenging.

"In the coming days, please keep in contact with NIE or myself in order to keep informed as to when expected reconnection will take place. Likewise, if connection happens to adjoining properties or neighbouring properties, but you are still without power please contact NIE as soon as possible in order to ensure there is not another minor fault preventing connection.

“Both cross border co-operation as well as mutual aid from GB has also been requested. This will go some way in attempting to expediate the clean up operation.

“What has ben incredibly uplifting has been the sense of community among all. From those who have offered to help to clear roads and fix roofs right the way through to community centres, church halls, GAA clubs and other organisations opening their doors to their facilities in order to allow people a charge of phones or the collection of hot water.

"I was able to take a spin (while I waited my own reconnection) around some of these places on Saturday and it was great to witness.”
