McGrath welcomes OEP consideration of Carlingford Lough
The SDLP’s Colin McGrath MLA has welcomed an update from the Office for Environmental Protection advising that the concerns he has raised are being given the appropriate consideration.
Commenting, the South Down MLA has said, “I am deeply passionate about our outdoor spaces. South Down really does boast some of the most beautiful and scenic landscapes and how we protect and enhance them for future generations.

"The issue of Carlingford Lough is one which I am proud to champion, given its vital significance to this shared place we call home.
“I recently highlighted some of my concerns regarding the level of contaminants that have previously been found in the lough, around the Warrenpoint area specifically. I will continue to raise these with the Minister, but have also written the Office for Environmental Protection which exists as a UK wide watchdog body. They have made significant recommendations to DAERA in the past and play a key role in holding them to account.
“I am delighted that the OEP have since been in touch to say they are now considering the concerns which have been raised, and will keep me updated as this progresses. Be under no illusions: the environment is something that needs to be a priority for all of us. Unless we are all willing to work together to address these matters, then for every step forward we will take two steps back.
“If the Minister is serious about improving water quality across the North then we need to see solutions, and investment, it’s just that simple.”
