Local councils must seize Narrow Water Bridge opportunity - Hazzard

The South Down MP emphasised that the bridge will be much more than an infrastructure project, highlighting the need to enhance community amenities to fully realise its potential.

Mr. Hazzard stated: "The Narrow Water Bridge represents a unique opportunity for the wider Carlingford Lough area, in sustainably connecting communities and driving regional development.

“To fully realise this potential it will be vital that Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and Louth County Council work together with the relevant public agencies north and south to drive forward local projects.

"The bridge must be complemented by an ambitious vision to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike, while preserving the area's natural beauty.

"Our local connectivity to the bridge must be seamless, with improved roads, pedestrian paths, and cycling routes connecting Carlingford, Omeath, Warrenpoint and Rostrevor.

"Given that Kilbroney Forest Park is South Down’s most visited tourist attraction, it is also essential that we see increased investment in the park to provide first class facilities for visitors and local residents.

Mr Hazzard added: "The Narrow Water Bridge project is key to unlocking South Down's huge tourism potential, and with work ongoing to extend the 'Ireland’s Ancient East' tourism brand into Con Down this project will undoubtedly support local businesses, create job opportunities, and strengthen the local economy.

"The Narrow Water Bridge then is a landmark project with the potential to transform the Carlingford Lough region; and working in partnership we can create a future that reflects our shared values of sustainability, community, and progress.”
