Sinn Féin Newry and Armagh MP Dáire Hughes has said international cooperation is key to addressing major global issues facing workers and families.

The first congress of the European Left Alliance (ELA) was held in Porto, Portugal.

"The ELA is a new left-wing European organisation committed to delivering workers’ rights, social progress, peace, solidarity, equality, climate justice, environmental protection and sustainable development," said Mr. Hughes after addressing the congress.

“The conference focused on the importance of international cooperation in tackling some of the major global issues facing workers and families, including standing against racism and in solidarity with the beleaguered people of Palestine.

“I addressed the conference on the current political situation in Ireland and the growing momentum towards Irish unity.

“It is time for the Irish government to commence planning for Irish reunification. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael may be content with the status quo, but we are not.”
