Sinn Féin MLA Sinéad Ennis has written to the Permanent Secretary of Department for Infrastructure to ask what plans are in place to return taximeter testing facilities to South Down.

The South Down MLA said: “This week, taxis right across the north will undergo meter upgrades in line with changes to fares brought in by the DfI.

“I’ve been contacted by local taxi drivers in South Down, who have raised concerns at the lack of availability for taximeter testing appointments.

“Since the pandemic, services at the test centre in Newry were removed - on what was supposed to be a temporary basis - resulting in taxi drivers having to travel to Lisburn or Belfast.

“I have written to the Permanent Secretary to ask what plans are in place to return services to South Down, and what measures are in place to help those drivers who are experiencing problems accessing appointments.

“We cannot be left in a situation where weeks out from Christmas, at the busiest time of year, taxi drivers are not able to work due to lack of availability for testing appointments.

Ennis calls for clarity on Taximeter testing

“It’s vital that people can get timely access to a taximeter test and not have to worry about being unfairly penalised.”
