Sinn Féin’s Mournes Cllr. Michael Rice voices his frustration over recent sectarian vandalism in Kilkeel.

Cllr Rice said the “offensive” graffiti was sprayed on the walls surrounding the outdoor gym on the Mourne Esplanade.

“There were also further sectarian graffiti spray painted on a bus shelter at the top of Knockchree Avenue,” he added.

“This was incredibly disappointing that the public gym was targeted, as it is an outdoor space that is used by everyone in our community.

“The amount of local people that have contacted me in relation this incident in recent days just shows the frustration people feel towards these pointless acts of intimidation.

“Local residents and public space users do not want this kind of demarcation and it reflects a narrowmindedness that thankfully no longer will be tolerated.”

The Sinn Féin councillor added, “The only purpose this serves is an expense on ratepayers to have the graffiti removed.

“I have contacted the Council maintenance team about this incident, and they will be working to have it removed as soon as possible.”
