Plans for the proposed Civic Hub at Abbey Way have been approved by Newry Mourne and Down District Council’s planning committee this afternoon.

After an hour and a half of robust arguments for and against the plans for Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s new offices, it was proposed by committee chair Cllr Declan Murphy (SF) and seconded by Cllr Cathal King to accept the planners’ recommendations before being ratified by a vote.

The proposals include a council room, meeting rooms, council offices and associated ancillary accommodation. It also will include public realm works to part of the existing surface car park. An additional Conservation Area Consent application is also in progress.

There has been controversy surrounding the project with almost 2,600 objections received against the proposal.
