The Slieve Gullion councillor said, “Speeding is one of the four main causes of serious or fatal road traffic collisions, along with drink/drug driving, using mobile phones, and non-wearing of seatbelts.

“Speeding is a choice which has been proven to have devastating consequences for people involved. It is very easy to think that it won’t happen to you or that you are a good enough driver to avoid these mistakes, however, you cannot control what happens on the road.

"Being conscious of your speed may save lives, starting with your own, so don’t speed and arrive alive.”

Cllr Murphy added, “Road safety is important for every single road user. We all have a personal responsibility to drive or ride in a way that keeps ourselves and others safe in our community.

"Every 1mph reduction in average speeds causes, on average, a 5% reduction in collisions. This could be the difference between life and death.

“So please slow down, take extra care particularly around our housing estates and schools and act responsibly on every journey.”
