An appeal has been launched to raise funds in memory of Anu Okusanya.

This week’s Newry Reporter told how Anu collapsed and subsequently died after running to a friend’s house to raise the alarm after seeing a gang who had attacked her previously beating up someone else.

A nurse at a local care home, she had been walking home on her usual route to her house in Damolly Village on Wednesday, August 24 when she saw a gang beating someone up. The same gang had attacked her twice in the recent past.

Anu, who had been living in Newry for 15 months, ran to a friend's house to raise the alarm but when she got there she collapsed. She died the following Sunday.

There has been a great outpouring of support for Anu's family and in particular for her son Olaitan, who was due to arrive in Newry on September 12 to start a new job and a new life with his loving mum.

Her funeral is now due to take place on September 14.

The funds from this appeal will be used to pay for a gravestone for Anu, with the remainder being used to give Olaitan the best possible start to his new life in Newry.
