No place in society for racism - Kimmins

Speaking after meeting local healthcare workers and business owners, some of whom were subjected to abuse, Liz said;

“We have been made aware of number of serious incidents in recent weeks, including attacks on property and the shouting of racist abuse.

“This is repulsive behaviour that is in no way representative of the people of Newry. There is no place in society for racism or racist acts.”

The MLA continued, “I have engaged with the PSNI and have arranged a meeting between the victims of these crimes and local police officers. Action must be taken to ensure everyone in our community feels safe at home and in their workplace. That includes people who have recently made Newry their home. I’m appealing to people to look out for one another and offer support to neighbours and friends who may need it.”

Liz’s Sinn Féin colleague Dáire Hughes MP also attended the meeting and added, “Newry has strong and welcoming communities that make this city a great place to live and work in. We know these racist acts will be repugnant to a huge and overwhelming majority of people here.

“I’d like to commend the organisers of Sunday’s ‘Stand Up To Racism’ rally and encourage as many people as possible to attend. The rally is at 2pm at Daisy Hill Hospital and has been organised by local trade unionists and a collection of groups and organisations. Let’s show everyone in our community that they are welcome and we appreciate the huge contribution they make to our society.”
