Austin Smyth, former editor of the Newry Reporter, passes away


Cutting his teeth as a journalist at the Reporter, Mr Smyth rose to become the title’s Deputy Editor before being appointed Editor in January 2001, having been Acting Editor since May the previous year.
He had succeeded Donal O’Donnell following his retirement.
Mr Smyth was well known for his depth of knowledge on local matters, local people and the history of the area, giving a number of talks on the city’s past.

Hide AdA funeral notice said that Mr Smyth’s passing was “deeply regretted by his wife Anne, daughters, son in law, brother in law, sister in law, grandchildren, sister, family circle and many friends”.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 9.30am in St. Catherine’s Church, Dominic Street. Private burial immediately afterwards.
