It is with regret that we announce the death of the former Editor of the Newry Reporter, Austin Smyth.

Cutting his teeth as a journalist at the Reporter, Mr Smyth rose to become the title’s Deputy Editor before being appointed Editor in January 2001, having been Acting Editor since May the previous year.

He had succeeded Donal O’Donnell following his retirement.

Mr Smyth was well known for his depth of knowledge on local matters, local people and the history of the area, giving a number of talks on the city’s past.

On behalf of the staff of the Newry Reporter we convey our sympathies to Mr Smyth’s family and friends at this sad time.
