Craft NI and Design & Crafts Council Ireland are calling on craft makers across the island to get involved in this year’s August Craft Month, with organisers hoping to surpass last year’s 1,500 participants.

The month-long programme will feature more than 400 events celebrating contemporary and traditional craft, while encouraging makers to collaborate with local businesses and communities in new ways.

Showcasing the very best of creativity and craftsmanship, this year’s August Craft Month programme will unite talented makers from across the island – from master craftspeople keeping traditions alive from generation to generation, to emerging makers bringing real vibrancy to the scene. This year, local makers are being encouraged to partner with other small businesses in their area to strengthen local connections. For example, running a workshop in a café, doing a demonstration in a local craft shop, or holding a maker talk in the library. With a packed calendar of events taking place throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, August Craft Month offers a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages to discover the richness of Irish craft. It’s also a chance to embrace mindfulness, have some screen-free time and have fun while learn something new. It provides an opportunity to meet the makers behind the work, support local talent by purchasing handmade products, and gain a unique insight into the stories and skills behind each creation. Katherine McDonald, Director of Craft NI, said, “August Craft Month provides an exceptional platform to celebrate and showcase the talented makers we have across these shores. “With more than 400 events taking place each year, we want to encourage as many makers as possible to take part. We are already delighted by the strong interest from councils, arts venues, guilds, galleries and individual makers who are all eager to be part of this year’s celebrations. “From hands-on experiences to inspiring exhibitions, we welcome a diverse range of craft events. Whether it’s an interactive workshop, a meet-the maker session, an engaging talk or a craft trail, August Craft Month offers countless opportunities to connect people with the creativity behind the work.” “This is a fantastic way for makers to showcase their talent, share their stories and connect with the wider public.” Suzy O’Keefe, Head of Digital and Communications, Design & Crafts Council Ireland (DCCI), said, “We are delighted to be partnering again with Craft NI for August Craft Month and we want to invite makers to apply to be part of the celebration. “Now in its fifth year, August Craft Month craft makers across the island getting involved and introducing new audiences to the joy of craft. “It is a wonderful opportunity for people to immerse themselves in the craft world, to try that thing you’ve always wanted to do, or to explore the incredible talent in our local communities and celebrate the rich creativity and craftmanship found across the island.” The deadline for entry is Sunday, June 7 - to register your interest please visit augustcraftmonth.org/applications.
