Multi-agency response to Warrenpoint odour welcomed by Sinn Féin

Sinn Féin representatives have welcomed confirmation from the Stormont Executive that a ‘multi-agency’ approach to eradicating an intermittent foul odour in Warrenpoint will now be established.

Sinn Féin’s Chris Hazzard MP, and Sinead Ennis MLA met with the Agriculture, Environment & Rural Affairs Minister Andrew Muir regarding the return of a foul odour from RDF waste being stockpiled in Warrenpoint Port.

South Down MP Chris Hazzard said: “Warrenpoint residents, local businesses, and visitors alike have been plagued by this foul and unpleasant intermittent odour for far too long - we need to see a strong, united response now from the authorities that recognises the anti-social nature of this issue.

“In light of the growing environmental health concerns being reported to us by the local community, we welcome the decision from Minister Muir to initiate a multi-agency response involving NIEA, local Council, and the Public Health Agency that will seek to address both the foul odour, and the use of pesticides and deodorants to treat the waste rotting dockside on Carlingford Lough.”

Sinéad Ennis MLA added: “I want to thank Minister Muir for affording local representatives the opportunity to meet together in order to illustrate the strong, united local view that resolute and robust action is required to deal with this problem once and for all.

“It is clear the minister is engaged on this issue, and we look forward to receiving an update in the time ahead.”
