It’s not the first time that such damage has occurred in the playpark, according to Sinn Féin Newry councillor, Aidan Mathers.

"I share the disappointment and anger of the local community that once again Play Area in Loanda has been vandalised and damaged,” he said.

“This facility is a vital community asset. It is availed of by our young people from the local community and indeed wider afield.”

“This continued type of vandalism on the Play Area not only causes anger and frustration but every time this amenity is attacked, it deprives children of the area the opportunity to play and enjoy.”

Cllr Mathers said the cost of repairing the damaged equipment “ends up being met by the ratepayer, and monies that should have been used for improving recreational facilities in our council area are lost”.

He concluded: “These continued acts of vandalism must cease. I would appeal to those engaged in this anti community acts of vandalism to stop.”
