Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan has called for improved autism services and greater inclusion of people with autism in everyday life.

April is World Autism Month and Mr Boylan commended groups like Autism NI for their advocacy in raising awareness.

He said: “The aim of World Autism Month and World Autism Day on April 2 is to focus on sharing stories and providing opportunities to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism by fostering worldwide support.

“While progress has been made in autism services, including the appointment of an independent Autism Reviewer to oversee the Autism Strategy, real-life stories show much more work is needed. The ‘I Am Not Okay’ Spotlight programme highlighted the urgent need for better support for young people with autism and their families.”

He added that the challenges facing people with autism require cross-departmental action and pledged to continue to work with the Ministers of Health, Education & Economy on improving support and opportunities.
