Parkinson’s UK launch new support group in Newry
Parkinson’s UK in Northern Ireland have started a new support group in Newry.
The newly formed group is run by a small team of local volunteers and meets on the second Monday of the month at Altnaveigh House, 51 Downshire Road, Newry, BT34 1EE, from 2pm - 3.30pm.
In starting the group, the volunteers are hoping that anyone affected by Parkinson’s in the Newry and Mourne area will come along to gain peer support alongside information and entertainment. Everyone living with Parkinson's, as well as their friends, family and carers are most welcome to go along.
At each meeting there will be an opportunity to hear from different speakers, take part in activities and have a chat with others over a cuppa.

Local woman Noeleen Doran, from Camlough, was diagnosed with Early Onset Parkinson’s in 2006 and says having a local group is of ‘great help and reassurance’ as she navigates living with the neurological condition.
She said: “As my condition has progressed it has had a bigger effect on my life and it's so important to make sure it doesn't become the only focus in life. I don't let it stand in the way of my daily life and the local support group is of great help and reassurance to both myself, and many others."
Morag Chambers, Volunteer Co-Ordinator with Parkinson’s UK in Northern Ireland, said: “Being diagnosed with Parkinson’s can be a shock and adapting to life with the condition can be hard for the person involved and their loved ones too. But we know that getting the right information and support at the right time can make all the difference.
“Our support groups are a welcoming, safe space where anyone affected by Parkinson’s can relax and enjoy socialising with other people who understand their experience.”
The next meeting of the support group will be on Monday, May 12. One of the charity’s Parkinson’s Local Advisors will be in attendance, speaking to the group and offering advice.
