The late Peter and Patsy McAteer

Warm tributes have been paid to the married couple of 62 years who died within hours of each other.

Patsy McAteer, 79, passed away in Craigavon Area Hospital on Saturday morning following a short illness.  Her loving husband, Peter, 83, died at their family home in Drumgullion Avenue later that afternoon.  They were buried side-by-side in Monkshill Cemetery on Monday afternoon following funeral mass in St Catherine's Dominican Church.

“They couldn’t live without each other in this life or the next,” grandson Kevin McAteer told the Reporter.

“They loved each other so much. We will all miss them so much. A huge gap has been left in all our lives.”

Kevin, a former Newry City councillor, said the couple’s Drumgullion Avenue home was the focal point of the family.

He said both his Nanny and Grandda did mountains of voluntary work behind the scene to help those in need.
