The big stuff is back
15 September 2021
This weekend sees Championship time get into full swing in both Down and Armagh.
While Crossmaglen Rangers saw off the challenge of Clan Na Gael in the Preliminary Round of the Cormac Leonard Armagh Senior Football Championship at the Athletic Grounds with a 0-19 to 2-11 victory on Sunday, it’s the turn of the Intermediate and Junior clubs to get their campaigns underway this weekend.
However, the big action comes in Down, where every Senior, Intermediate and Junior side will be in action from tomorrow (Thursday) right through to Monday evening.
While Cumann Pheadair Naofa v Longstone and Bryansford v Glenn bookend the Morgan Fuels Senior Championship, the pick of the ties comes on Sunday afternoon when current holders Kilcoo meet a resurgent Mayobridge in the first of a double-header in Pairc Esler, with Clonduff favourites to beat Rostrevor in the later match at the same Newry venue on the same day.
In the Intermediate Championship, local interest on the opening weekend lies with the showdown between Newry Shamrocks and Drumgath at Ballyholland on Sunday (1pm), while Saval will aim to build on their promotion from Division 3 when they take on Darragh Cross in Newcastle, also on Sunday at 1pm.
In Armagh, while the Senior sides prepare to begin their bids for Championship glory the following weekend, this week it’s the Intermediate and Junior sides ready to go.
Forkhill will aim to build on last year’s Junior title win when they face An Port Mor in the Intermediate competition on Saturday (5pm), while on Sunday, it’s the turn of the big hitters in the second tier with Whitecross, Carrickcruppen and Shane O’Neill’s all in action. On the same afternoon, Thomas Davis Corrinshego take on Dorsey in the Junior Championship at Crossmaglen (3pm).
In the Buttercrane Ladies Senior Football Championship, Carrickcruppen, who saw off Camlough rivals Shane O’Neill’s at the weekend, will bid to overcome holders Armagh Harps in the 2021 final at the Athletic Grounds on Sunday at 2pm.
