A young Man United fan from Bessbrook fulfilled his dream by leading his heroes onto the pitch at the Old Trafford.
Shea Burns Watters led the Man United legends team on to the Theatre of Dreams pitch for their match with Barcelona legends last weekend.
The St Paul’s High School student walked out with former Reds hero Dwight Yorke and lined up alongside United legends Ruud Van Nistlerooy, Edwin Van der Sar and Wes Brown as they took on former Barca favourites Patrick Kluivert, Edgar Davids and Abidal.
Watching from the stand was proud dad and huge United fan Gerry who said Shea’s appearance on the hallowed Old Trafford turf was a very proud moment.
“It was a great day. Shea was over the moon,” said Gerry.
“He’s been to a few United games, but always asked if he could be a mascot at Old Trafford.
“I applied a few times without success and we thought it would never happen as he recently turned 11. But it has happened and it was fantastic as he led the United team out with Dwight Yorke. It really was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for him.”
Gerry kept the secret that Shea was gong to be a mascot right up until they reached Old Trafford.
The Year Eight pupil was then gob-smacked when they entered the stadium at the directors’ entrance and he was given a gold armband for entry to the mascot quarters.
He watched his side draw 2-2 with the Spanish giants with Van Nistlerooy and Danny Webber netting for United.
“When he realised that he was going to be a mascot for the game, he looked at me and his eyes just welled up,” said Gerry.
“He’s a big United fan and this really was a dream come true for him. And to lead the team out was just unreal. It was a fantastic day all round.”To read more subscribe to our online Newspaper
