NLC Sunday swimming hours to be extended

The Council has confirmed to the Reporter that Newry Leisure Centre (NLC) will be extending its Sunday swimming hours later this year.
In a statement sent to the Newry Reporter, responding to concerns raised in a letter sent to this paper about public lane swimming availability, the Council said that the centre would soon be opening at 10.30am on Sundays instead of its current time of 1.30pm.
The letter, published in its entirety on this page, questioned how the pool is being operated ‘in respect to swimming lanes’, and claimed that members of the public who pay in to swim are left ‘with either no lanes to swim in or being told that one lane might become available at a certain time’.
The letter writer also claimed that swimming clubs are to increase their use of the pool from this month onwards, and said that this would have ‘an adverse and detrimental effect on how the public/ratepayers use the pool and on the little space they have to swim’.
The Council response, also printed here in full, stated that they regularly review schedules across ‘its leisure facilities to cater for all community needs’.
It also claimed that lane swimming availability is provided for ‘during approximately 94 per cent of the centre’s opening hours’, adding that timetables were available ‘to allow users to view the pool scheduling’.To read more subscribe to our online Newspaper
