£16m Park Boost

13 October 2021 - by Brian Hyland

The council is set to apply for £16m in funding for the Albert Basin Park project, the Reporter understands.  At this Thursday’s Strategy, Policy and Resources Committee (SPR) committee, it is believed councillors will be asked to support a huge cash application through the City Deals Complementary Fund. The funding is separate from the £132m pot for Belfast Region City Deal projects in the district which include new council offices, a theatre/conference facility and the Southern Relief Road.

The £100m ‘Complementary Fund’ was announced by Finance Minister Conor Murphy last year as part of the Executive’s £700m match investment for City and Growth deals. The Department’s website says the additional £100m is ‘...for complementary projects where partners can demonstrate a viable capital project which is complementary to the City/Growth Deal proposals’. The unexpected move comes amid mounting public pressure and frustration over slow progress on the park project.
